SLCD TO HOST CAREER DAY FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
A banker, a librarian, a prosecutor, a policeman and a journalist – these are just some of the career paths students from The School for Language and Communication Development (SLCD) will learn about at the Third Annual Career Day on Friday, March 26th from 10am to 12pm.
“We want to host this Career Day for our Middle/High School students as a way for them to better understand the opportunities that exist for them out in the real world,” said Dr. Ellenmorris Tiegerman, President and Founder of SLCD. “We are thrilled to get our children excited for their future endeavors and future career aspirations.”
A panel of speakers will present a short presentation discussing their area of expertise and the type of training/schooling necessary to attain their present position. Representatives from the Department of Labor, Queens County Savings Bank, NYPD Community Affairs, Woodside Library, Queens Center Mall and the Dow Jones are just a few of the fields that will be highlighted. Following presentations, students (approximately 60 students are participating) will have the opportunity to approach speakers on an individual basis and ask specific questions they may have regarding their area of work.
The School for Language and Communication Development provides special education services to children with language disorders including those along the autism spectrum continuum. SLCD’s program has grown from 36 preschoolers to more than 400 children ages 18 months to 21 years in elementary, middle and high school programs. As SLCD celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year, its mission to meet the special needs of children unable to speak or communicate still remains constant and the School’s motto “Language Learning for Lifelong Success” is continuously upheld.
