BANK OF AMERICA SUPPORTS GIRL SCOUT LEGOS ROBOTICS COMPETITION
Bank of America recently awarded the Girl Scouts of Nassau County $10,000 to support and expand the LEGO Robotics Project, which allows Girl Scout teams to participate in the First LEGO League (FLL) Competition.
“We are so grateful for Bank of America’s generous donation to our organization to help increase our participation in the FFL Competition,” says Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “Our girls work so hard and diligently for months preparing for the event and because of companies like Bank of America, even more girls will be able to have the opportunity to participate in this wonderful learning experience.”
The LEGO Robotics project gives girls the opportunity to join a team that will research, design and build robots for competition. The funding allows the Girl Scouts of Nassau County to add three new teams. It also allows the Girl Scouts of Nassau County to add a career component where teams will have the chance to visit Long Island corporations that specialize in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). One goal of this project is for girls’ to develop an interest in one of the STEM fields as a possible career choice.
Girl Scouts of Nassau County teams have done very well in the LEGO competitions. In 2008 the “Ice Breakers” won the prestigious Champion’s Award and traveled to Atlanta for the FLL World Festival Competition, representing Long Island. In 2010, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County teams placed 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 12th which qualifies them to compete in the Regional Championship Tournament on Sunday, February 28th! Since the program’s inception two years ago, approximately 150 girls have participated.
Girl Scouts of Nassau County builds girls of courage, confidence and character. Girl Scouting in Nassau County creates an accepting and nurturing environment, which gives girls a chance to build character and receive skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them throughout their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. With more than 22,000 girl and 7,000 adult members, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has become the preeminent organization and leading authority for girls. The organization, now in its 98th year, continues to make the world a better place one girl at a time.
