Garden City, NY May 17, 2012 – 2012 marks the 65th Birthday of Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Camp Blue Bay. To honor the 65th Birthday of Camp Blue Bay, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has started the Anniversary Brick Campaign and will also host the Camp Blue Bay 65th Anniversary weekend on September 21st to 23rd.

“The Anniversary Brick Campaign is a great way for all Girl Scouts, past or present, girl or volunteer, to leave a mark on a camp where they made fond memories, or as place that impacted their family and friends,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County.

Leave your personalized mark on Camp Blue Bay! Purchase a brick to honor your Troop or Troop leader, memorialize a loved one, recognize a special accomplishment, celebrate the 65th Anniversary or share a camp memory. Your personalized brick will become part of a border and pathway that will surround the flagpole at Camp Blue Bay’s Dining Hall.

Bricks each measure 4” x 8” and can accommodate 3 lines of text. Each line can contain up to 13 characters (including spaces). The cost per brick is $65 – to celebrate 65 years of Camp Blue Bay. Anniversary Brick Orders must be placed by July 30th.

Join Girl Scouts of Nassau County as they celebrate the 65th anniversary of the beautiful Camp Blue Bay located in East Hampton, NY at a fun filled birthday celebration, which will include the unveiling of the new brick pathway at the flagpole.

For more information or to purchase your commemorative brick contact Laura Bissett-Carr at BissettL@gsnc.org or 516.741.2550 ext. 233.

Garden City, NY May 14, 2012 – With more than 600 attendees, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Girls Go the Distance Walkathon and Activity Fair on Sunday, April 22nd at Old Bethpage Village Restoration was a great success raising more than $28,000! The two-mile walk complete with entertainment and activities gathered together Long Islanders, families, Troops, community and local corporations to gain awareness for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Healthy Living Initiatives.

“It was a wonderful day learning about different ways to lead a healthy lifestyle and walking for a great cause,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We thank our amazing sponsors for their support and all of the participants!”

The Healthy Living Initiatives bring a unique perspective to keeping girls healthy. Girls define health in their own terms, placing as much emphasis on emotional and social well-being as physical health, nutrition and physical fitness. In addition to healthy eating and physical fitness, the Healthy Living Initiatives also focuses on increasing girls’ self-esteem, media image awareness and how to develop healthy relationships.

Families, Troops, community and local corporations gathered together for the two–mile walk complete with entertainment, activities and barbeque provided by The Meat House. Attendees participated in fun activities that helped them learn about healthy choices, while Girl Scout Alumnae and corporate teams met with today’s Girl Scouts, networked with peers and real-life role models for girls throughout Nassau County.

A special thank you goes out to the event sponsors for their generous contributions including Corporate Sponsors: Emblem Health, Hofstra University, The Meat House and Winthrop University Hospital. Community Sponsors included: Adelphi University, Arrow Transfer and Storage, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Friendly’s Restaurants, Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP, Lackmann Culinary Services, Long Island Board of Realtors, Long Island Ducks, Long Island Marriott, Mutual of America, St. Joseph’s College, Whole Foods.

Garden City, NY May 11, 2012 – Susan Caruso, Glen Head resident, recently announced her plans to retire in May of this year after more than a decade’s worth of commitment to the Girl Scouts of Nassau County as Director of Human Resources.

“I accepted Susan’s decision, knowing that our staff is losing a trusted colleague,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We will miss Susan very much. I know that she has continued to work a number of years past her original “retirement target” and so I am grateful for the additional years of service given to Girl Scouts of Nassau County. There are new adventures ahead for Susan, and we wish her every happiness.”

Ms. Caruso was a Girl Scout growing up in Manhasset, where she and her twin sister competed for how many badges they could earn. She returned to Girl Scouts as an adult when she was a member of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Board of Directors from 1985 to 1993 and joined the staff as Director of Human Resources in February 1999. Under her leadership, she has ensured that the Council has been in compliance with appropriate state and local law, has seen that the Human Resources Committee has stayed current in their review and adjustments to our Human Resource policies, and has been an exceptional “shopper” working to see that the Council and the staff have the best possible health insurance coverage at the best prices available.

In addition under Ms. Caruso’s leadership, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County received recognition for their “family friendly” workplace from Family and Children’s Services Association here on Long Island. They were also named one of the “Fifty Best Workplaces” in the United States by AARP, and again recognized among the “Top Fifty Workplaces” in the whole country by NonProfit Times.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County builds girls of courage, confidence and character. Girl Scouting in Nassau County creates an accepting and nurturing environment, which gives girls a chance to build character and develop leadership skills for success in the real world.
New York, New York May 9, 2012 – Many couples today decline marriage, but what happens when financially lopsided couples who decline the protections of marriage, break up? Wealthy individuals or those who anticipate large inheritances may want to protect their assets. Likewise, those who enter into a relationship and sacrifice time and effort in supporting it in non-financial ways will want to ensure their security should a break-up occur.

“Like most states, New York does not recognize common law marriage and does not allow same sex marriage or civil unions,” said Liz Mandarano, a Manhattan family law and divorce attorney at Bikel & Mandarano, LLP and frequent blogger for the Huffington Post Divorce Vertical. “Therefore, individuals who cohabitate, even for decades, are legally considered strangers when it comes to property rights. It is critical that unmarried couples who live together discuss financial expectations, personal obligations, and identify property rights should the relationship end.”

The recent Pew Research Center study found that 39 percent of Americans say marriage is becoming obsolete. And, the break-up rate for cohabiting couples is similar and even higher than divorce rates- 40% of will break-up within five years. The law looks unfavorably on people who do not marry. By declining to examine the needs of a fast growing population that has opted out of the traditional marriage setting, New York fails to protect a significant portion of its population.

Mandarano adds, “Let’s say a woman supports her boyfriend through business school. They cohabitate, but decline to marry for political reasons. After 10 years, they break-up. Over the years, his success ultimately earned him millions. In New York, a married woman has the laws of equitable distribution to protect her. The unmarried woman? Zip.”

So without legislation or an active judiciary, how do unmarried cohabitants protect their rights? Mandarano recommends partners have cohabitation agreements, as well as wills. These agreements may be beneficial if:

You have significant assets or an anticipated inheritance.

You own a business or property purchased before or during the cohabitation.

There are children from a previous relationship.

There is an income disparity.

You or your partner has debts.

One person is sacrificing economic power to raise children.

To properly compensate a caregiver.

To clarify personal expectations of the relationship.

To clarify financial support during the relationship or upon its dissolution.

To specify health insurance coverage.

To determine the right to serve as a guardian in the event of incapacitation or to make medical decisions.

You want clarification on a variety of issues such as how expenses are handled, infidelity, and separation and death provision.

Mandarano continues, “New York needs to acknowledge a trend that shows no sign of long-term reversal and examine the financial impact that occurs when a cohabiting couple break-ups in the same manner it examines the impact of divorce. New York then needs to enact appropriate legislation that protects both sides just as when a marriage ends. Until that time, cohabiting couples should contract, either by themselves or preferably with the assistance of an attorney, as to such financial obligations and property division upon the termination of the relationship.”

Bikel & Mandarano, LLP is a midtown Manhattan-based boutique law firm devoted exclusively to matrimonial, divorce and family law as well as related legal matters such as estate planning. The founding members, Dror Bikel and Liz Mandarano, have a unique combination of strong trial experience, effective negotiation skills, and attention to detail that achieve the best resolution possible. As a boutique venture, the firm seeks creative solutions and invests all of their resources to provide their clients depth and scope of legal expertise in their specialized practice.

Garden City, NY May 4, 2012— Help a girl who cannot afford to attend Girl Scouts of Nassau County Summer Fun Day Camp and/or Sleep-away Camp at Camp Blue Bay by purchasing a campership today! Your donation will provide a one-of-a-kind camping experience to a local Girl Scout in need.

“While we make every effort to budget funds and ensure that every girl who wishes to go to one of our summer camps can, we unfortunately cannot provide assistance to all of the families who need it,” said Donna Ceravolo, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “That’s why we’re asking for your support and we thank you in advance for all of your help. ”

Every summer the Girl Scouts of Nassau County provides a camp experience for more than 450 girls. For many of them, the dream of going to camp would be out of reach without assistance. In order to meet the increasing demand to provide opportunities for camp to as many girls as possible, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County asks the community to buy camperships – $625 for Camp Blue Bay and $350 for Summer Day Camp, but all donations are welcome. Give a girl a chance to experience all that summer camp has to offer!

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County offers two summer programs, which consist of one day camp located in Nassau County and one sleep-away camp located in East Hampton. The Summer Fun Day Camp is located at Wantagh Park. A typical day at this camp includes sports, arts & crafts, nature walks, singing and fun in the pool. On rainy days, girls participate in activities such as indoor games, crafts, songs and more. Camp Blue Bay in East Hampton is owned and operated by the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. It is located on 179 acres of beautiful beachfront property. The camp offers a variety of learning and challenging experiences. A typical day at this camp includes boating, swimming, crafts, team building activities, nature games, campfires, singing and more. The camps are open to the general public. Day Camp is open to girls in grades 1-7 and Sleep-away Camp is open to girls in grades 1-11.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County builds girls of courage, confidence and character. Girl Scouting in Nassau County creates an accepting and nurturing environment, which gives girls a chance to build character and develop leadership skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them throughout their lives, like strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. In order to get girls there, Girl Scouts has declared 2012 the Year of the Girl in a move to rally the nation around the cause of girls’ leadership. With almost 21,000 girl and 7,000 adult members, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has become the preeminent organization and leading authority for girls. The organization, now in its 100th year, continues to make the world a better place one girl at a time.

The Spring Benefit, which is being held on June 5, 2012, is an exclusive, gourmet four-course wine pairing dinner hosted by Executive Chef Tom Schaudel of Jewel Restaurant & Lounge in Melville, NY. Proceeds from the event will help to meet the foundation’s pledge to raise $100,000 to fund various projects at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in 2012.

As part of their 2012 commitment, funds will be used to construct and furnish a family room within the hospital. This space will allow the patients and their families the opportunity to escape their hospital rooms to a more private and comfortable setting.

“We are thrilled to be working with the Cohen Children’s Medical Center again in 2012,” said NYBKW Charitable Foundation President Barry Berg. He continued, “We are highly committed to raising the necessary funds to support this incredible hospital and the children of Long Island who need it most.”

The NYBKW Charitable Foundation will also continue supporting its Jordan Alex Dubrow (JAD) Fund, which will once again look to help the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) purchase a life-saving piece of equipment. Last year, NYBKW helped Josh and Stacey Dubrow establish the JAD Fund in memory of their son, and in a matter of months they successfully raised over $50,000 for the NICU’s purchase of a Blood-Gas Analyzer Machine.

When speaking about the foundation and its mission Josh Dubrow explained, “We will forever be proud to honor Jordan’s legacy, and more importantly give the amazing doctors and nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit the equipment they need to save the lives of many babies.”

Teaming with NYBKW to sponsor this event are: The Blau/Radler Group of UBS Financial Services; Carter, Deluca, Farrell & Schmidt LLP; Gennaro Jewelers; Jewel Restaurant & Lounge; Post Wine & Spirits and Sandata Technologies.

The NYBKW Charitable Foundation was founded as a registered 501(c)(3) charity several years ago after the partners and staff at NYBKW decided to formalize their relentless commitment to caring for others. The mission statement of the NYKBW Charitable Foundation is to improve the welfare of men, women, and children, especially on Long Island.

Melville, New York April 26, 2012- Testicular Cancer is the most common solid tumor for men between the ages of 15 to 45-years-old. Testicular cancer is one of the most curable types of cancer if it is caught early.

“Every man should know the symptoms and risk factors for testicular cancer and perform self-exams regularly,” says, Dr. Deepak A. Kapoor, president of Advanced Urology Centers of New York, the largest independent urology group practice in the United States.

Testicular cancer occurs when healthy cells in the testicles are altered. They grow and divide abnormally, but it’s not clear what causes testicular cancer in most cases. Men may be at higher risk for testicular cancer if they have a family history of the disease, abnormal testicle development or an undescended testicle. Testicular cancer is more common in Caucasian men than African-American men.

Dr. Kapoor adds, “A great time to perform self exams is after a shower. The scrotum is looser, the testicle is easier to feel in a warm environment and it’s a private place to perform exams. Pay attention to the size, shape and texture for any changes. Just like women are encouraged to perform self-examinations from a young age, we need to work towards educating young men to do the same. Men should start self-exams at age 15 and repeat the self-exams monthly.”

Dr. Kapoor recommends that men should look for and be aware of the following when performing self-exams:

• A painless lump or swelling
• Pain or discomfort in the testicle or scrotum
• Changes is texture, size or feel
• A sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum
• Heavy sensation in the scrotum
• A dull ache in the abdomen, back or groin

If a man notices any of these above symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor as soon as possible. They will perform a physical exam and may order lab and diagnostic tests.

Dr. Kapoor continues, “Even in the late stages of this disease, survival rates are high; however, it’s best to catch the cancer before it has time to spread to other organs. Many young men are embarrassed about any problems they may experience in their genital region and since the tumors are usually painless, they fail to see a doctor quickly. Encourage your loved ones to examine themselves frequently and seek help early.”
